So since I've just started my senior year...pretty much the main thing on everyone's minds is college...what school to apply to...what deadlines to meet...etc.

Soooo....I decided, hey, might as well start a college thread. For those of you still in high school (especially you seniors) who are looking into schools, where are you planning on applying?

And for those already in college, any advice, warnings, words of wisdom for the rest of us?

Apply early for everything - the sooner the better, it takes schools forever to process everything!! Watch those deadlines!!!!

Apply as early as possible. Like seriously, I'd have it out before Thanksgiving. I sent mine out a couple days after Thanksgiving, and it was awesome being sure of where I was accepted before Christmas. Keeps you from getting so stressed out like so many of your classmates, and then you have more time to decide which one you want to go to.

Like they said apply early. Get your FAFSA in early...and do all the scholarship stuff you can...some of it so easy, but ppl don't do it. There is a lot of money out there that is unclaimed each year.
Also..pick the school YOU want...I went to the school that the guy I was currently seeing went to and it sucked for the first couple of months..now I love it.
Um...if you are a girl, you might want to look into girls dorms...they are sooo much nicer then the coed dorms, you do miss out on all the boys but they are usually nicer.
If you are lookin for a great school..KU is awesome!!

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS! It's free and easy money.....someone's gotta get it!
Do everything early...it's much less stressful!
Spend time with your parents and family (You really will miss them!)
Go to Virginia Tech! (LOVE the school!)
Also, I'm in a co-ed dorm and I love it. I'm on a floor with all girls though, and it's really not bad. Guys are over all the time so we have our fair share of guys on the floor. The girls are actually pretty dirty (unfortunately). In fact, most of my friends are guys...the girls here are kind of stuck up.
Oh, and make sure you stay busy...I love having freedom to do what I want! I don't think I've come back to the dorm before 2 since I've gotten here. It's amazing!

Same thing everything else has said -- apply early! Especially watch those FAFSA deadlines.

Apply to more than one school, it's always better to have fall backs. I didn't get into the one school I really want to, but was accepted to a school I applied to simply because they offered me a fee waiver. I figured `why not try,` and it's a good thing I did, I researched and eventually found out I liked it more than my original #1 choice -- I've been here now for a few years and I love it.

Research your schools and chose something you want to pursue -- its OKAY to not know exactly what you want to do, but get out there and start with your core classes. College will be an amazing experience!

I just started my junior year of college. My advice: pick what YOU truely WANT to study and go with it, even if your friends and/or family are pushing you in another direction. If it makes you happy, don't let anyone talk you out of it.
(backstory:I just spent 2 miserable years in a major that I didn't want to do. However, with some soul-searching and a bit of outside inspiration, I'm back where I wanted to be to start with. I'm finally happy. )

Agreed on the scholarship thing. There are tons of scholarships out there that people never hear about. I think there's even one you can get by making a prom dress out of Duck Tape...

Amazon.com is your best friend. The campus bookstore is not.

thanks for the advice im just starting my junior year in high school and still have no idea what i want to do! so i have a lot of work to do - but i know i want to go to college somewhere in new york preferably new york city..so thanks for the advice

If you pick the right college you will enjoy your self. I went to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville for 1 year and loved every minute of it. I was dumb enough to move back home for a stupid boy and ended up at the University of Central Florida in Orlando and hated every second I was there.

Just make sure you like the school, the city and all of its surrounds...if you can know that then you will have a great time. College can be so much fun!! The freedom is amazing!! Good Luck.

suny stony brook on long island if so thats right down the block from my college suny suffolk

Apply for a ton of scholarships even if you don't think you'll get them, you'd be surprised as to how many you might get.

my words exactly. i'm riding through college on all of the money i got from scholarships. plus, if you get scholarships from certain companies.. some of them offer you internships too.

i'm a freshmen in college. my word of advice is to definetly start applying early. i started in february and march! and also keep your options open. don't apply for just one college. even though you have one college that you have your mind set on, it's always good to have a back up just in case you don't get accepted. and if time comes to start school, and you have NO CLUE what you want to do or where you want to go...start taking general classes at a community college. That way you can get the basics over with. Plus, most colleges will accept you right off the bat if you have been to a community college.

Apply early, Apply to at least 3 school (The one you really want, a "sure thing" back up school, and the college you don't think you can make it into, but would like to try for). Apply for scholarships early!
Freshmen: Your grades REALLY do matter on your transcripts, so make sure you keep up with your schoolwork...Freshman GPA can bring up/down an overall GPA. Get involved in your high school and your community. Colleges look at your extracurricular activities when deciding whether or not to accept you.
Sophomores: Start reasearching colleges...Have a general idea of which schools you like. Take the PSATS
Juniors: This is the most important year. Start visiting college campuses, and have at least 3 colleges in mind that you want to apply for (I applied to 5). Take your SATS in the spring. Keep up with your classwork and make sure that you get good grades.
Seniors: Apply early to colleges and research scholarships. DO NOT SLACK OFF!!!! Colleges do consider your grades during your senior year...and will revoke your acceptance to a college if you stop trying your second semester!


The best college advice I ever got came from my dad. He told me to set myself up so that I could choose my college, and not have a college choose me. In otherwords, keep your grades up and get involved in high school activities so that when you apply to college you can pick out of the colleges that accepted you. Don't settle for anything less than what you want.

Most of all, have fun. Preparing for college is stressful, but in the end the reward is worth it. College is a great experience!

I know a million people who go to Cornell and my best friend goes to Stony Brook
