I don't like this thread. haha. I'm still questioning whether I should have gone away or not. Anyway, good luck to everyone this year!! Have fun!! hehe!

Piece of advice: If your not looking into a really competitive school and I don't mean that in a bad way, but don't fret over trying to get in b/c you most likely will. I think people make applying to colleges a bigger deal than they really are. I never did sports in H.S. Only a few activities, but not much and i'm going to a school now that is supposedly ranked very high.

Just remember to choose the school that best fits you and nobody else and it's not necessary to apply to 10 (or more) colleges. I only applied to two and got into both of them

Although this is a good point, it's not necessairly true, I got rejected by all the schools I applied to except for my safety which I was a guranteed shoe-in. Don't think that AP classes necessarily puts you in the eyes of colleges, the ones I applied to didn't really care about all the honors and ap classes I did. Oh well their loss right?

I applied to 5 school. 1 long shot/I probably won't get in there school, but it's fun to try school (UNC), 1 that I really wanted to go to (Virginia Tech), 1 backup school (Bridgewater College), 1 that my parents wanted me to apply to because it is a nice school (James Madison University), and 1 that kept calling and sending me things to go there...plus that application was free (Roanoke College). To my surprise, I got accepted to all 5 schools. I'm not saying to go apply to 5 schools, but I would make sure that you apply to at least 1 school you WANT to go to, and 1 backup school. I've had friends that have only applied to 1 school and not gotten accepted, leaving them with no where to go. It sucked for them, and left them scrambling to get into a community college at the last minute.
As far as extracurricular activities go, you don't have to be president of every club in your school, and participate in all the sports teams you can, but some extracurriculars are a good thing, and almost necessary. EVERY person that I talked to that was in charge of accepting/rejecting applications at colleges said that they could/would reject people if they didn't have any extra activities because they want to accept well-rounded students.

yeah, for real. its getting slightly stressful for applications, and i've made sunday my, "college app/scholarship" day.

i'm applying to 4 or 5 schools, but we'll see how it happens. eh, its kinda nerve wracking, but i think i have the grades and extracurriculars to help me. Smile

Another crucial part is having a good application essay. if it's a "your choice" essay topic (those are the best!) the application administration doesn't want to read an essay on "Toxicity Levels in the Atlantic Ocean." They want to know something about you. And not just "Hi! I'm Emily and I'm 19 and I would be a good student at Blue U because I am a good person." They want something dynamic...a catch your attention, entertaining essay. It doesn't have to be blow-you-out-of-the-water amazing....but make it catchy. A tip from some of my teachers: Don't start the essay with a regular sentence. Start it with a question. A miscellaneous, but interesting fact that pertains to what you're going to write about. Or start with a quirky little story. I wrote one of my essays about (*cheesy alert*) being a twin and how much I had learned from Amy (ha, she got a kick out of that...). I think I started it "Have you ever been in a department store and walked past a mirror and turned around and started talking to your reflection? Have you ever seen a picture of your face and thought 'That might not be me' I have." Or something like that...it was phrased a lot better in the essay....which is on my other computer so I don't have access to it right now. Anyways...the essay was pretty awesome, if I must say so myself. Bottom line, write something catchy...it makes you seem a LOT more interesting.

Oh, and here's my gem of wisdom on where to apply. I say choose 3 schools. One that is the school you really would like to go to...but is a stretch as to whether you'll get in or not. One school that is a good school, and you'll probably get in, but you never know. And one back up school...that you'll most definitely get into. If some of them overlap, it's okay. As for me, I applied to 4 schools. Corcoran (art college in DC) was my way out-there school. Virginia Tech was my "I'll probably get in...it's my favorite, but you never know" school. Bridgewater College was my backup. And James Madison Univ. was the school that my parents thought was a nice school with a good art program that they wanted me to apply to. Luckily for me, I got into all 4 schools that I applied to........so you never know.....even that "way out there" school may work out for you. Anyways, good luck to everyone who's starting the application process. Get them done early!!! Don't procrastinate! And SCHOLARSHIPS, SCHOLARSHIPS, SCHOLARSHIPS. So much scholarship money isn't given away because people don't apply for it! And just because it's only a $100 scholarship doesn't mean you shouldn't apply for it. One girl at my HS applied to soooooo many little scholarships (that pretty much nobody else applied to) that she had her entire tuition at Harvard payed for. Smart girl.
Again, best of luck!

Do the extra curriculars necessarily have to be in High School? I mean I'm in student senate, but that's about all because it's all that interests me. But I also did basketball for 5 years and this is my 5th year of dance, so they count too right?

Anything extra counts. If you volunteer every Saturday (on your own time) at an animal hospital, by all means, put that. If you are actively involved in a church youth group, put that too. They mostly want to see that you are well rounded and manage your time wisely.

My advice for everyone applying to college, and I wish someone had said this to me at some point, is just choose schools you know you'll love. I applied to 6 schools and I would have been insanely happy at any one of them. If I thought there was a slight possibility that I wouldn't be happy, I didn't apply. But so many of my friends applied to schools and went to them just because and are miserable now. (Granted it is only the first month of school). Also, everything happens for a reason. I only got into one of my schools, it was coincidentally the one that I wanted the least. I'm here now and I can't imagine myself anywhere else. PC is the perfect school for me and now I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. The thing is, when I found out I hadn't gotten in anywhere else I wasn't really upset because I knew that I loved PC anyways. You just have to take it all in stride.

I have a question for everyone at college. How do you pay for college? I'm at a community college right now and am most likely going to transfer by fall 2007. I see the universities as the overrated way hahah and jealous of my friends that are already there. Anyways financial aid pays for everything and that's how I get through at the community college. My parents recently told me that we can't afford college for me and I'm going to have to commute which is fine. I was just wondering how does everyone pay?

^I wish someone told me that, since I'm so miserable here. One of my friends is trying to convince me I should transfer and to tell my parents, but I'm afraid to disappoint them. I feel too guilty to tell my parents I'm not liking it here at all and that most of the time I'm sad and miserable; I just wish I knew if it would be the right thing to tell my parents and if I should really consider transferring.

And Kari for financial aid I got offered work study and extra loan to cover the rest of my expenses. Unfortunately for me most work study jobs left are off campus and the ones that aren't want upperclassmen so I'm still struggling to find myself a job. I wish I had a car to get places.

I attend Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, CA (Southern Cali for those of you who don't know the area) and all I can say is that college is a lot better than high school! There is so much more freedom when you are in college, it's amazing! I went to a community college for two years before transfering to Azusa Pacific and for those of you who are little anxious about the work load, that's a great route to take to get your mind and body acclimated to the whole college scene. My friend isn't suggest a school, rather just suggesting I should transfer and try to find some place I'll be happy. And to be frankly honest I'm not feeling well physicially or emotionally.
